This article outlines the steps required to change a Panel Air Filter on a Subaru WRX and STI 2008-2018. This is pretty straight forward to do, but we do get asked how to do it from time to time, so this article should be of use.
Although this guide is for a 2008 onwards model, the steps are similar for the earlier cars, although the Airbox, Maf and hose design are completely different.
Before we start, a quick note to say that cannot be held responsible for any harm or damage caused to either yourself, others or your vehicle by following this guide – its simply a guide to help you when carrying out the change of Air Filter.
Ensure vehicle ignition is fully switched off prior to commencing work.
We always recommend that work is carried out by a qualified vehicle technician.
Tools Required – Flat Head Screwdriver
Time Expected – 20 Minutes
Difficulty – Easy
1 – Carefully disconnect Mass Air Flow Sensor by depressing clip (please note this can be brittle) and unclip the two securing clips on top of Airbox
2- Unclip the pipe at bottom of Airbox
3- Loosen the Jubilee clip using a flat head screwdriver
4- You can now remove the Airbox lid to gain access to the Panel Filter
Once the old filter is removed, clean out any debris in the Airbox and insert the new filter and reinstall Airbox lid and connections, which is similar to following these steps in reverse.
